Math Thru Music.

THE MISSION

To excite, educate and empower students to gain a greater understanding of numeracy, entrepreneurship, coding and social justice using using the art of DJing.

Math Thru Music (MTM) teaches students the importance of numeracy using music. The program combines DJing with numeracy in this hands-on experience. No matter the choice of music, math plays a huge part and MTM connects the dots. DJs perform under immense pressure and some of that is relieved through knowing basic mathematics. MTM uses the engaging craft of DJing to build stronger numeracy skills.

THE MTM KIT

Now it's possible to bring the MTM experience to your school. Every MTM kit is self-sufficient and can be used to teach math curriculum concepts such as integers, algebra, fractions, ratios, percentages, multiplication, division and more. The kit is easy to use and requires little to no technical training to set up or operate. All software and curriculum is preloaded onto the MTM laptop making it easy to get started immediately.

WHAT'S IN THE KIT?

Each kit includes the following:

1. Pioneer DJ Turntable

2. Laptop with Rekordbox software preloaded

3. Two DJ Headphones

4. Whiteboard with marker and eraser

5. All additional cords and hardware

6. A 35 lesson curriculum preloaded that covers the following math lessons: multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, integers, decimals, percentages, algebra, ratios and more

 SOCIAL JUSTICE ASSEMBLIES

Today Hip Hop is a multi-billion dollar per year industry, but where did it come from? Why was it created? And most importantly, what can we learn from it?

The 4 Corners Assembly takes students back in time to the Bronx, New York; one of the most inequitable circumstances for people of colour. Throughout the 70’s the area was a symbol of urban decay. However, it was from these dire circumstances that Hip Hop was born.

The story of Hip Hop is the story of how a community started to communicate a message of equality to the world. Through decades of suffering, this art form blended and transcended to become a means for seeing, celebrating, experiencing, understanding, confronting, and commenting on life. Hip-Hop became a way of life, inextricably linked to culture for people of color.

The name “4 Corners” comes from the four elements of Hip-Hop culture. They include:

DJing — The artistic handling of beats and music

Mcing — Putting spoken-word poetry to a beat

Breaking—Hip-Hop’s dance form

Graffiti — The painting of highly stylized graffiti

DJ’s are the soul behind the beat that pleases, surprises, and puts people on the dance floor; all while communicating a subtle and powerful message through song. It is that insight, a passionate knowledge of music, and technical know-how that make Djing one of the pillars of Hip-Hop culture.

JAY-D CODING KIT

We partnered up with CircuitMess and are on a mission to inspire innovators of technology – not just consumers. With the Jay-D coding kit, you’ll learn how microcomputers and other electronic components are used for sound production. Learn about Digital-to-Analog conversion, how to solder, what sound waves are and how to produce them with computers, and finally – code custom sound and lighting effects. The best part is that you get to assemble it yourself!

WHAT'S IN THE KIT?

  1. Main circuit board – connects all the chips together
  2. Display board – 128*160 TFT color display
  3. Acrylic casing
  4. A bag of other small components such as resistors, pushbuttons, nuts and bolts
  5. Two 5W speakers
  6. Custom-made plastic knobs

MIXING MATH

No calculators allowed! Every song ever made has a BPM (Beats Per Minute), which determines the pitch and genre of the song. Using various formulas, students are taught to exercise their problem-solving skills in order to mix same or different genres of music together. MTM encourages curiosity and creativity while learning to understand mathematics.

DJ software beats per minute.

IN CLASS, LUNCHTIME OR AFTER SCHOOL

Our program easily dovetails into any schedule. It brings potentially boring concepts to life for the student and gives teachers an interactive tool to fortify lessons.  We respect school culture and guarantee that only clean songs are used.

This unique, cutting-edge approach that blends math curriculum with DJ skills ensures maximum student engagement. Each DJ console and laptop is equipped with two sets of headphones which allows at least two students to participate at the same time.

DEEJAYZ

Learn how microcomputers and other electronic components are used for sound production! Students will learn to solder, how a DJ controller works, necessary components for digital sound production, sound waves and how
can they are produced using computers and various electronic components, DAC’s (Digital Analog Converter) and how they can be controlled for simultaneous playback of multiple sound files.

Students will also be challenged to digitally customize their console by coding various light shows through the provided software. Continuing with custom effects, participants will personalize sounds and record their own music mix from their builds.
